Introduction

The ITI Third-Level Scholarship Programme is your opportunity to receive financial assistance through third-level education and progress to the AITI programme to begin your career as an AITI Registered Tax Consultant. If you aspire to a dynamic profession, one which offers top-level opportunities in business and industry, but lack the funding for  spiralling college or university costs, then our scholarship programme is open to you.

Who is Eligible to Apply?

Leaving Certificate students in the Republic of Ireland who are interested in a career in taxation but who would be unable to progress without financial support can apply for the scholarship. Applicants must:

  • be nominated by the school Guidance Counsellor with an accompanying reference,
  • feel that they will be able to achieve at least 450 points in the Leaving Certificate,
  • be interested in studying a relevant third-level qualification (business, legal or other relevant discipline), and
  • be motivated, enthusiastic students who are committed to entering into the exciting and dynamic world of taxation.

On completion of your qualification the scholar is expected to proceed to complete the three-year part time Associateship of the Irish Taxation Institute (AITI) programme in the appropriate timescale, to qualify as an AITI Registered Tax Consultant.

How do I Apply for a Scholarship?

Step 1: Your Guidance Counsellor will be required to put forward the best candidate(s) and register interest with the ITI, giving a list of eligible students by 29 January 2010.

Step 2: The ITI will then issue the required amount of application forms to the school, which must be completed in full and returned to the ITI by 31 March 2010.

Applications must include:
a) a 300-word profile from the student as to why they think they should receive the scholarship; and
b) a recommendation letter from the Guidance Counsellor or other relevant school personnel.

How will Candidates be Selected?

The ITI Third-Level Scholarship Committee, comprising of education and taxation experts associated with the Institute, will undertake the selection process. The decision is final and the ITI will not enter into negotiation following the announcement of the winner. All applications will be reviewed by the committee and evaluated according to the following criteria:

  • Candidate’s motivation, enthusiasm and commitment to completing this Scholarship Programme and to pursuing a career in taxation;
  • a proven academic record showing the candidate’s ability to successfully complete a relevant third-level course and  the AITI qualification;
  • the existence of an economic barrier that may prevent the student from continuing on to third-level education after completion of the Leaving Certificate;
  • the candidate’s suitability in terms of skills and personal qualities demonstrated in the application form and interview process;
  • the ability to achieve 450 points in the Leaving Certificate.

Notification and supporting documentation must be sent to the ITI.

What will the Scholarship Cover?

The Third-Level Scholarship Programme will (subject to the Rules of the Scholarship) cover the costs of the scholar’s selected third-level qualification and associated living costs up to a maximum of €7,500 per year, to include living expenses, books and other associated costs. On completion of the third-level qualification, the scholarship will cover the costs of the AITI programme and the Institute  will endeavour to secure employment for the scholar in a relevant firm while studying for the AITI.
