How do I register as a student?

The AITI Student Handbook 2008/2009 is available to download here. You should read it carefully before submitting an application to register as a student.  We are currently accepting registrations for 2008/2009.

How many examinations are there in the AITI programme?

There are 12 examinations in total: four at Part 1, four at Part 2 and four at Part 3. Students must sit all four examinations at each Part in one sitting.

Where can I do the course?

The Irish Taxation Institute runs dedicated evening lecture and homestudy courses to prepare students for the AITI examinations. Students are not permitted to sit any Part of the AITI examinations without having attended the relevant course. Courses run from October to March. Evening lectures are held in Dublin and, subject to demand, in Cork and Galway. Lectures take place on two evenings each week.

What is homestudy?

The homestudy option is an alternative to attending evening lectures. Students may be required to complete specified assignments before weekend workshops.

What exams do I need to have passed to register?

To register as a student, it is necessary to have obtained a minimum of two grade C2s (Cs before 1992) in higher-level papers and three grade B2s (grade Bs before 1992) in ordinary-level papers in the Leaving Certificate at one sitting. These five subjects must include English and Mathematics.

The ITI may accept other professional or academic qualifications (including overseas qualifications) where it is satisfied that such qualifications are of a standard that is at least equal to the aforementioned. It may also consider applications from candidates with at least five years' relevant practical experience.

Do I have to be working in tax?

No. You do not need to be working in tax to register or to sit the exams, nor do we require that you gain practical experience in tax before being admitted as a member. An increasing number of our students are drawn from a wide range of sectors.

Am I eligible for exemptions?

The ITI may grant exemptions from certain papers at Part 1 where students have successfully completed examinations of an equivalent standard. The maximum exemption is from all four papers at Part 1. A full list of exemptions can be downloaded from here.

The course that I did is not listed for exemptions. What can I do?

Please note that the list does not cover all qualifications. If your course is relevant but not listed, encourage the awarding body to make a submission to have that course formally recognised.

Where your qualification is not on the list, we may consider it on a case-by-case basis. Please submit an official transcript from the appropriate body with a detailed syllabus and examination papers of the relevant subjects. The syllabus and examination papers must be cross-referenced to the Part 1 syllabus for which the exemption is being sought.

How much does the course cost?

Full details of 2008/2009 fees can be found in the AITI Student Handbook 2008/2009. Please note that course fees include tuition and all course materials required for the relevant Part of the course.

When will I receive confirmation of my registration?

If you have submitted a complete application with the correct forms and appropriate proof of entitlement for exemptions (where relevant), you should receive written confirmation of your registration and your student number once your application has been approved and your details entered on our database. Please allow about 10 working days for this. You will need to quote your student number when applying for examinations and accessing the secure Students area of our website, so please retain it carefully.

Is it possible to sit the examinations and not attend the course?

No. Students will not be permitted to sit any part of the AITI examinations unless they have followed the course for that Part.

Where can I get the books and course materials that I need?

Dedicated manuals – largely written by the lecturers – past papers, legislation and all ITI publications on the recommended reading lists are provided as part of the course materials. Students are also provided with the ITI's bimonthly publication, Irish Tax Review.

When will the course materials be delivered?

Course materials are dispatched from our printer’s premises by courier. They are not available for collection from the ITI. As we dispatch to over 1,600 students in a matter of weeks, we cannot predict the exact time or day when your materials will arrive. For this reason, we request a business address for delivery of materials, as someone will have to sign for the delivery upon arrival.

What student services are available?

Student services include a secure Students area on the website and a dedicated course co-ordinator who can be contacted by phone or e-mail. The website should be your first port of call. It is updated regularly with all the latest information for students, including any changes to timetables or supplementary materials. The ITI’s bimonthly publication, Irish Tax Review, also contains a dedicated Student News section. If you have queries about the course, your application, fees or exams, your co-ordinator will be able to answer them. Students also receive TaxFax, a weekly e-newsletter to keep you up to date with the latest tax news.
